PEDAGOGICAL
TECHNIQUES
My approach
to teaching has developed over the last 10 years through
my extensive experience as a student. I spend a good
percentage of my student career traveling around the
country taking clarinet lessons from some of the
most experienced players and teachers in the entire
world.
Over the
past several years I have had the immense privilege of
studying with Richard Hawkins of the Oberlin
Conservatory in Ohio. I consider him to be one of my
greatest influences as far as playing the clarinet. He
has not only inspired me to continue my musical studies,
but has given me the tools necessary to pursue clarinet
playing and teaching on a much higher plain.
An
experienced mouthpiece craftsmen, Richard Hawkins has
taught me the extensive intricacies of reed manipulation
(shaving, sanding, flattening, etc.) in conjunction with
different mouthpieces configurations (facings, openings,
etc.). Since obtaining this knowledge I have been able
to perfect the techniques of reed work and thus share it
with my students. Reeds are an aspect of the clarinet
that is all to often overlooked simply because teachers
were never taught how to deal with reeds.

Teaching
Procedures:
-
My
teaching usually takes place on a one-on-one
setting. I do all of my teaching at my apartment in
east Orlando or at the University of Central
Florida.
-
I use the first
lesson as way to get to know the student and for the
student to get to know me. Essentially it is an
audition for both teacher and student.
-
I teach
students ranging from the beginning level all the
way up to the pre-college level.
-
Students
are expected to practice prior to coming to lessons.
-
I
primarily give 1 hour lessons, but ½ hour lessons
can be arranged for younger students.
Topics of
Instruction:
-
Tone
Production and embouchure (the shape of the mouth
when playing the clarinet)
-
Reed
manipulation and shaping. This includes sanding,
carving, flatting and breaking-in of reeds. Students
may also wish to learn the art and craft of reed
making.
-
Learning
proper body posture
-
The
assembly and handling of your Clarinet
-
Proper
Finger placement
-
Promoting a more natural way to playing the
clarinet, without tension
-
Learning
Scales and using varying methods
-
Preparing and Making the All-State and All-District
Bands
-
Learning
Solo Repertory of the clarinet
-
Learning
how to practice efficiently and effectively
Items for
consideration:
REEDS
MOUTHPIECES
-
Students studying with me will
be given the opportunity to experiment with
different mouthpieces. "All mouthpieces are not
created equal." As with most things, higher
quality mouthpieces are usually more expense.
-
Clarinet companies DO NOT
INCLUDE quality mouthpieces with their clarinets. If
a student is playing on a mouthpiece that came with
his or her clarinet, we will most likely invest time
into finding a quality mouthpiece that works well
with the student.
